What Wages Do I Have to Pay at Termination and When Do I Have to Pay Them?
These rules are critical for you to understand, because even if you are a few days late in paying final wages after termination, you could be liable for three times the amount owed.
If you terminate someone for any reason, they must be paid on the day of termination. If an employee voluntarily resigns, wages must be paid in the next regularly scheduled payroll. What is owed: all wages earned as of the termination date, any commissions earned as of the termination date, and any accrued but unused vacation time. Other time off, like sick time, does not have to be paid out at termination. Learn more here about the Massachusetts Wage Act. |
